Pregnancy zone protein (PZP) is a tetrameric protein, encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 12p13.31. The structure of PZP is similar to Α-2-macroglobulin and it is mainly synthesized in liver.

Pregnancy zone protein (PZP) functions as a plasma protease inhibitor. Experimental studies suggest that PZP might also play a vital role in regulation of T-helper cells and/or extracellular chaperones. Overexpression of PZP has been observed in senile plaques and in microglial and glial cells in Alzheimer′s disease (AD) patients. In addition, PZP expression is also upregulated in normal pregnancy and various other inflammatory conditions.
