The Rh family C glycoprotein (RHCG) gene is mapped to human chromosome 15q26.1. RHCG is a non-erythrocytic protein and is a member of ammonia transporters (Amt)/ methylammonium permeases (MEP)/ rhesus (Rh) family of proteins. RHCG is mainly localized in the connecting tubule, in the collecting duct of the mammalian nephron as well as in the variety of extra renal tissues.

Rh family C glycoprotein (RHCG) facilitates the transport of ammonium across plasma membranes, to inhibit toxic accumulation of ammonium formed particularly during glutamine metabolism. In addition, it also increases acid secretion in the collecting duct (CD) by stimulating the transport of not only NH₃ but also CO₂ across the membranes of CD cells. Loss of gene expression leads to the development of human oesophageal cancer.
