General description
Xanthine is a purine derivative. It has been reported to be formed during the metabolism of purine. Its presence in biological fluids is a marker of pathologic states, such as xanthinuria. Flavonoid nanostructured electrochemical sensor has been fabricated and employed for the voltammetric estimation of noradrenaline, acetaminophen, xanthine and caffeine, simultaneously.
Application
Xanthine may be employed in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity assay for the generation of superoxide radicals.

Neurons can undergo a diverse range of death responses under oxidative stress, encompassing apoptosis (caspase-dependent, programmed cell death) to various forms of caspase-independent death, including necrosis. We recently showed that primary murine cortical neurons exposed acutely to hydrogen peroxide undergo
