General description
Xanthine is a purine derivative. It has been reported to be formed during the metabolism of purine. Its presence in biological fluids is a marker of pathologic states, such as xanthinuria. Flavonoid nanostructured electrochemical sensor has been fabricated and employed for the voltammetric estimation of noradrenaline, acetaminophen, xanthine and caffeine, simultaneously.
Application
Xanthine may be employed in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity assay for the generation of superoxide radicals.

Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), a complex flavoprotein, catalyzes the metabolic reactions leading from hypoxanthine to xanthine and from xanthine to urate, and both reactions take place at the molybdenum cofactor. The enzyme is a target of drugs for therapy of gout
