General description
N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl) phosphoethanolamine (NBD PE) is a fluorescently labeled lipid with NBD attached to the headgroup of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). It localized at the membrane interface. PE is the second most abundant, metabolically related aminophospholipid. It acts as a parent compound for phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine synthesis.
Application
16:0-12:0 NBD PE may be used to demonstrate the separation of fluorophore-labeled phospholipids using microfluidic chip-based technology and in liposomes preparation required to measure the phosphatidylserine decarboxylase 1 (Psd1p) activity.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphoethanolamine (PE) of cardiac myocytes is useful in the prevention cell damage after ischemia. It acts as a phospholipid substrate for hepatic enzyme contributes to the one third of the phosphatidylcholine content in the liver. It is known to show extensive antitumor action and prevents tumor proliferation, in vivo.

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is a major cellular phospholipid that can be made by four separate pathways, one of which resides in the mitochondrion. The mitochondrial enzyme that generates PE is phosphatidylserine decarboxylase 1 (Psd1p). The pool of PE produced by Psd1p

Phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) are metabolically related membrane aminophospholipids. In mammalian cells, PS is required for targeting and function of several intracellular signaling proteins. Moreover, PS is asymmetrically distributed in the plasma membrane. Phospholipid molecules such as ceramide and phosphoinositides play crucial roles in signal transduction pathways. Lipid-modifying enzymes including sphingomyelinase and phosphoinositide kinases regulate the generation and degradation of these lipid-signaling molecules and are important therapeutic targets in drug discovery.
