General description
C12-NBD Phytosphingosine is a fluorescent analog of biologically active sphingoid base lipid molecule, phytosphingosine. Phytosphingosine is predominantly found in the lipid lamellae. Phytosphingosine (PHS), a long-chain base sphingoid is a vital component of phytoceramides and is generally present in kidney, skin, and intestine.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phytosphingosine (PHS) is metabolised into glycerophospholipids and other long-chain bases, including malonyl-ACP in yeast and mammalian cells. PHS is known to display skin moisturizing effect by controlling filaggrin metabolic pathways and plays an important role in coordinated formation of natural moisturizing factors and corneocyte envelope.

The long-chain base phytosphingosine is a component of sphingolipids and exists in yeast, plants and some mammalian tissues. Phytosphingosine is unique in that it possesses an additional hydroxyl group compared with other long-chain bases. However, its metabolism is unknown. Here
