General description
C12-NBD L-threo-Sphingosine is an analog of L-threo-sphingosine with a fluorescent NBD group. Sphingosine is an amino alcohol that belongs to the class of sphingolipids. L-threo-Sphingosine is one of the four isomers of sphingosine, which can be differentiated by CD spectroscopy.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sphingosine is uniquely produced by de-acylation of ceramide. It can be converted back to ceramide by the scavenger pathway. Several studies suggest that sphingosine functions as a tumor-suppressor lipid that mediates growth arrest, senescence, apoptosis and differentiation. Treatment of cells with sphingosine is known to inhibit the activity of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk-1 and Erk-2), and activate stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs) such as Jun amino-terminal kinases (JNK) and p38.
