General description
18:1 Phosphatidylethanol (PEth)/1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanol is a sodium salt of modified lipid, wherein C-1, C-2 of glycerol is substituted with 9Z-octadecenolyl and C-3 of glycerol is substituted by phosphoethanol group. This lipid metabolite of ethanol has two oleic acid chains.
Application
18:1 Phosphatidylethanol (PEth)/1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanol may be used:
- as a standard in liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of PEth in human whole blood
- as a reference material in quantifying phosphatidylethanol in human blood by liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC−HRMS )
- to incorporate into human high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles to study its effects on the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cultured human smooth muscle cells
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) obtained from phosphatidylcholine in erythrocytes can acts as an important biomarker for alcohol consumption.

To study whether qualitative changes in high density lipoprotein (HDL) phospholipids mediate part of the advantageous effects of ethanol on atherosclerosis, we investigated whether HDL associated phosphatidylethanol (PEth) affects the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from cultured human
