General description

14:0 PC-d67 is a deuterated phosphatidylcholine (PC) in which 67 protons of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine are replaced by deuterium. PC is a glycerophospholipid and is the most important constituent of the eukaryotic cell membrane. It comprises up to 40-50% of the total cellular phospholipids, wherein this distribution varies in different cells and organelles.
Deuterated fatty acids experience exchange of the deuteriums on the alpha carbon to the carbonyl, i.e., C2 position, and will therefore be a mixture of compounds that are fully deuterated and partially deuterated at that position.

Application

14:0 PC-d67 or 1,2-dimyristoyl-d54-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine-1,1,2,2-d4-N,N,N-trimethyl-d9 has been used for bicelle preparation. It may be used in phospholipid monolayers to study how propofol penetrates the lipid monolayers. It may also be used for the preparation of asymmetric bilayer to measure sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) spectra measurements.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is critical for the production of second messengers and lipid mediators. Along with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), it functions as an intermediate for the formation of other glycerophospholipid classes.. Any disturbance in PC levels interferes with various cellular activities.
