Biochem/physiol Actions
Acetyl-CoA is an essential cofactor and carrier of acyl groups in enzymatic acetyl transfer reactions during protein post-translation. Oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate yields acetyl CoA. It is also produced by condensation of acetate and thiol catalysed by acetyl CoA synthase. Oxidation of acetyl CoA in tricarboxylic acid cycle is associated with energy production.
