Its mode of action involves the stimulation of insulin release from the β-cells of the pancreas in response to a glucose load. It helps in increasing the number of insulin receptors, thereby enhancing the effect of insulin on the liver and promotes peripheral glucose utilization.

Chlorpropamide may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations using capillary zone elctrophoresis technique and spectrophotometric technique.
