(2R,3S)-2,3-Dihydroxybutyric acid is the enantiomer of (2S,3R)- 2,3-dihydroxybutanoic acid, which is a normally occurring carboxylic acid in humans. Metabolic profiling of urinary organic acids from patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (juvenile-onset) have revealed significantly elevated levels of this metabolite. The normal urinary constituent (2S,3R)-2,3-dihydroxybutanoic acid was found to diminish in urine incubated with E. coli.
