Gene Information
human ... PFKFB1(5207)
General description
6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 1 (PFKFB1) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome Xp11.21. The encoded protein is one among the four isoenzymes of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase. PFKFB1 is expressed predominantly in liver.
This gene encodes a member of the family of bifunctional 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase:fructose-2,6-biphosphatase enzymes. The enzyme forms a homodimer that catalyzes both the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-biphosphate using independent catalytic domains. Fructose-2,6-biphosphate is an activator of the glycolysis pathway and an inhibitor of the gluconeogenesis pathway. Consequently, regulating fructose-2,6-biphosphate levels through the activity of this enzyme is thought to regulate glucose homeostasis. (provided by RefSeq)

Application
Anti-PFKFB1 antibody produced in rabbit has been used in western blotting.
Biochem/physiol Actions
6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 1 (PFKFB1) catalyzes the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. It plays a vital role in regulation of both glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. PFKFB1 also facilitates cell growth and apoptosis.
Physical form
Solution in phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4

6-Phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFK-2/FBPase-2) catalyzes the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, a potent regulator of glycolysis. Previous studies assigned the gene for human liver PFK-2/FBPase-2 (HGMW-approved symbol PFKFB1) to the X chromosome; however, precise localization remained ambiguous, with the gene variously placed

The bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase-4 (PFKFB4) controls metabolic flux through allosteric regulation of glycolysis. Here we show that p53 regulates the expression of PFKFB4 and that p53-deficient cancer cells are highly dependent on the function of this enzyme. We found that
