Biochem/physiol Actions

Serine protease inhibitor; Inhibitor of thrombin and activated factor X (Xa). Effective concentration equimolar with proteinase.
Serine protease inhibitor; Inhibitor of thrombin and activated factor X (Xa). Effective concentration equimolar with proteinase. AT III becomes depleted in sepsis, toxic shock, severe burns, organ failure, and xenotransplantation. AT III supplementation reduces morbidity and mortality in animal models of sepsis and organ failure.

Preparation Note

When reconstituted with 1.0 ml of deionized water, solution will contain a minimum of the stated activity in 0.1 M sodium chloride, and 0.02 M Tris, pH 7.5.

Analysis Note

Homogeneous by gel electrophoresis.

Other Notes

Not to be confused with thrombin antiserum.
One unit is the activity present in 0.1 ml of normal human pooled plasma tested in the presence of 0.1 unit of heparin.
