Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoproteins (hnRNP) are RNA binding proteins that form complexes with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). HnRNPs regulate pre-mRNA processing, metabolism and nuclear cytoplasmic shuttling. Specific hnRNPs have unique nucleic acid binding properties. HnRNP A/B which is upregulated by TGF-β has been shown to regulated neural development and neuron cell survival after glutamate stimulation.

The hnRNPs are produced by RNA polymerase II and are components of the heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) complexes. They are associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and appear to influence pre-mRNA processing and other aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. The hnRNP proteins have distinct nucleic acid binding properties.
