General description
Eotaxin is a member of the CC chemokine family, and belongs to the MCP/eotaxin subfamily. It has wide range of tissue expression, such as thymus, heart, lungs, lymph nodes, kidney, and intestines. It is also expressed by epithelial cells of lung, pleural mesothelial cells, epithelial cells of bronchial airway, and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). This gene maps to human chromosome 17q21.1-q21.2.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Eotaxin is a chemoattractant for eosinophils, and is involved in inflammatory diseases, such as asthma. It is induced by glucocorticoids and cytokines. Along with interleukin-5 (IL-5), it results in airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), and hence, lung inflammatory disorders. In humans, it leads to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine-enhanced disease, and the eosinophils are also responsible for the elimination of virus. It might also be involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases, which involve eosinophils. It can lead to the production of reactive oxygen species, thus, resulting in damaged lung tissue. It is overexpressed in multiple diseases such as allergic rhinitis, nasal polyposis, endometriosis and Hodgkin′s disease.
Potent inducer of eosinophil chemotaxis.
Potent inducer of eosinophil chemotaxis. Causes accumulation of eosinophils in response to parasitic and viral reactions.

Eotaxin is a potent inducer of eosinophil chemotaxis and was considered as a selective ligand of the CC chemokine receptor 3 (CCR3), which is expressed on eosinophils, basophils, and Th2 lymphocytes. This study shows that eotaxin also interacts with CCR2

CCL11 (Eotaxin) is a potent eosinophil chemoattractant that is abundant in atheromatous plaques. The major receptor for CCL11 is CCR3, which is found on leukocytes and on some nonleukocytic cells. We sought to determine whether vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs)
