General description
Human gelsolin (also known as brevin) is an actin severing protein found in mammalian cells and blood plasma. Gelsolins consist of a 730 amino acid core structure which contains six repeated domains. These six domains make up three distinct actin binding sites. The plasma enzyme contains an N-terminal extension of 25 amino acids that raises its molecular weight from 90 kD to 93 kD.
Application
Plasma gelsolin levels may be used to identify patients at risk for increased morbidity.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Gelsolin is an actin-binding protein that regulates the assembly and disassembly of actin filaments.
Gelsolin is an actin-severing protein found in mammalian cells and blood plasma. Exhibits tumor suppressor activity in several cancer cell lines and in nude mice.

Summary Successful malaria transmission from the mosquito vector to the mammalian host depends crucially on active sporozoite motility. Sporozoite locomotion and host cell invasion are driven by the parasite's own actin/myosin motor. A unique feature of this motor machinery is

Gelsolin is a widely distributed actin binding protein that regulates actin filament length. It exists in both an intracellular and an extracellular form that is derived from a single gene by alternative splicing. Both forms contain the six homologous domains
