General description
Glycophorin A (GpA) is an important sialoglycoprotein on human red cells. It is one of the best characterized mammalian integral membrane proteins, containing three distinct domains. A large hydrophilic portion carries the NH2-terminal and is positioned on the external surface of the red cell, and the COOH-terminal is found in the cytoplasm. A hydrophobic segment of 23 amino acids (embedded within the lipid bilayer ) connects these two hydrophilic sequences.
Application
Glycophorin A was used to study the Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte-binding antigen-175 (EBA175)-glycophorin-A interaction.
Biochem/physiol Actions
It is a membrane glycoprotein with several isoforms that interact with other membrane proteins to confer shape and antigenicity to erythrocytes.

Cytoadherence-linked asexual gene 9 (Clag9), a conserved Plasmodium protein expressed during the asexual blood stages, is involved in the cytoadherence of infected red blood cells (RBCs) to the endothelial lining of blood vessels. Here, we show that Plasmodium falciparum Clag9
