Biochem/physiol Actions

Regulator of G-protein signaling 5 is a protein encoded by the RGS5 gene in humans and is mapped to chromosome1q23 region. It is a tissue-specific signal regulating molecular protein that plays an important role in the development of vasculature. The messenger RNA of the gene is abundantly expressed in heart, lung, skeletal muscle, and small intestine and at low levels in brain, placenta, liver, colon and leukocytes. It is highly expressed in some malignant tumors. Over-expression of this gene promotes tumor metastasis by inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition in Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). RGS5 expression may act as a novel biomarker and opens the path to explore new possibilities of therapeutic intervention aiming at targeting tumor blood vessels. It may be involved in cancer differentiation and metastasis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). RGS5 expression level in gastric carcinoma is associated with the differentiation and microvascular density of the tumor.
