Biochem/physiol Actions
VAA is not blood group specific, but has an affinity for terminal β-D-galactosyl residues. VAA inhibits protein synthesis similarly to Ricin (RCA60) and inhibits allergen induced histamine release in vitro from human leukocytes.
Physical form
Highly purified, lyophilized powder containing phosphate buffer salts. Package size based on protein content.
Preparation Note
Purified by affinity chromatography using a modification of the method of Ziska.
Analysis Note
Agglutination activity is expressed in μg/ml and is determined from serial dilutions in phosphate buffered saline, pH 6.8, of a 1 mg/ml solution. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of human blood group O erythrocytes after 1 hour incubation at 25 °C.

A lectin from Viscum album which specifically binds to D-galactose was isolated by affinity chromatography on O-lactosyl-, O-galactosyl-polycarylamide or hydrolized sepharose 4 B. Some serological and physicochemical properties of the agglutination are reported.
