General description
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an essential nucleoside triphosphate produced exclusively in the mitochondria, recognized as the primary energy currency of all living organisms. This high-energy molecule captures chemical energy within its phosphate bonds, driving critical cellular processes. Disruptions in ATP production can occur due to genetic disorders such as Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, Leigh syndrome, neuropathy, ataxia, and retinitis pigmentosa, which can significantly affect cellular function. ATP is generated during photosynthesis and cellular respiration, fueling various cellular activities, including biosynthesis, motility, and cell division. As a vital indicator of cellular activity, ATP levels are frequently measured to evaluate cell viability and cytotoxicity in research and drug discovery, underscoring its crucial role in understanding cellular health and functionality.

Biochem/physiol Actions
The ATP Assay Kit is a sensitive assay for determining ATP in various samples (ranging from 2 – 10 nmole/well for the colorimetric assay and from 20 – 1,000 pmole/well for the fluorometric assay). ATP concentration is determined by phosphorylating glycerol, resulting in a colorimetric (570 nm) or fluorometric (λex = 535/λem = 587 nm) product proportional to the amount of ATP present.
