Fto是一种双加氧酶，可通过氧化脱甲基作用修复烷基化的DNA和RNA。Fto对含有3-甲基尿嘧啶的单链RNA的活性最高，其次是含有3-甲基胸腺嘧啶的单链DNA。Fto对含有1-甲基腺嘌呤或3-甲基胞嘧啶的单链DNA具有较低的脱甲基酶活性。Fto对1-甲基鸟嘌呤没有活性，对双链DNA也没有可检测的活性。Fto需要分子氧、α-酮戊二酸和铁。Fto有助于调节全球代谢率，能量消耗和能量稳态。Fto有助于调节体型和体内脂肪的积累。
