Gene Information
human ... GCNT3(9245)
General description
The GCNT3 (glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) transferase 3, mucin type) gene codes for an enzyme synthesizing the core of mucin protein and is mapped to human chromosome 15q22.2. The enzyme is predominantly expressed in stomach and colon.
Immunogen
Peptide with sequence C-NKFDPKVDDNALQ from the internal region (near C terminus) of the protein sequence according to NP_004742.1.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Gcnt3 (glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) transferase 3, mucin type) is involved in the biosynthesis of core 2, core 4 and blood group I antigen in secreted mucins. Overexpression of GCNT3 gene is observed in human pancreatic cancer and contributes to elevated mucin formation, aggressive tumorigenesis and decreased patient survival. The GCNT3 gene is known to promote cell proliferation and spheroid formation in tumors. Deletion of GCNT3 gene results in loss of core 2 O-glycan in the stomach and colon.
