General description
The PIWIL1 (Piwi like RNA-mediated gene silencing 1) gene encodes an 861 amino acid protein, which belongs to the Piwi subfamily of Argonaute proteins. This gene is mapped to human chromosome 12q24.33. The Piwi proteins are mostly localized to the germline, where they bind to PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs). The Piwi proteins contain the Piwi-Argonaute-Zwille (PAZ) domain and the PIWI domain.
Application
Anti-PIWIL1 (internal region) antibody produced in rabbit is suitable for immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Anti-PIWIL1 (internal region) recognizes human, mouse, and rat PIWIL1.
The Piwi proteins are important for the biogenesis and function of small non-coding RNAs. These proteins and PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) have been implicated in epigenetic control of gene expression, transposon silencing, gene expression, and translation regulation. The Piwi proteins significantly participate in germline development and gametogenesis of various metazoan species. These proteins undergo symmetrical dimethyl arginines (sDMAs) modification by protein methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5).
Physical form
Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide
Preparation Note
Store at –20 °C. For continuous use, store at 2–8 °C for up to one month. For extended storage, freeze in working aliquots. Repeated freezing and thawing, or storage in “frost-free” freezers, is not recommended. If slight turbidity occurs upon prolonged storage, clarify the solution by centrifugation. Working dilutions should be discarded if not used within 12 hours.
