5-Formylcytosine (5fC) is oxidized derivatives of 5-methylcytosine serving as an epigenetic mark in vertebrate genomic DNA. It appears that 5fC is required as a regulatory mark to promote Pol III recruitment as well as tRNA expression. Also, 5-Formylcytosine is involved in formation of chromocenter during zygotic genome activation (ZGA) in nuclei of Xenopus and mouse embryos.
