Biochem/physiol Actions
BMP2 (bone morphogenetic protein 2) plays a vital role in the activation of the autonomic lineage-specific basic−helix-loop-helix protein, MASH1. It also plays a key role in autonomic neurogenesis in neural crest stem cells in vitro. In addition to its osteogenic activity, BMP2 also participates in cardiac morphogenesis. Mutation in the BMP2 gene is associated with osteoporosis.
