General description

Boron trifluoride is a colourless gas and readily reacts with water to form hydrates. It has been widely used as a catalyst during polymerizations, alkylations and condensation reactions. It is generally used as gas flux during internal soldering or brazing. It also finds application in being used a extinguisher for magnesium fires.

Application

It was used in transmethylation of 1,2-Diacylglycerol (DAG) containing fractions which were purified using HPLC. It may also be used to treat lipids during determination of fatty acid methyl esters and dimethylacetals using GC.

Other Notes

Reagent for O-acetyl, methyl ester, methyl 2,2-dimethoxypropionate, dimethyl acetals and dimethoxy.
