Praziquantel may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard in the determination of the analyte in pharmaceutical preparations by electrochemical, spectrophotometric, and chromatographic techniques.

Praziquantel is at present the only drug used for the treatment of human schistosomiasis. It has a pyrazino isoquinoline ring system and is found to be very successful in animals for its anticestode and antitrematode properties. It has been identified that the voltage-gated schistosome calcium ion (Ca²⁺) channels serve as a target for praziquantel. Even though the commercial preparation of praziquantel comprises of equal amounts of both its ‘dextro′ and ‘laevo′ isomers, only the ‘laevo′ form exhibits schistosomicidal activity.
